A Moment of Reflection: The Price of Political Extremism

Regardless of our political preferences, and despite Trump’s actions regarding LGBTQ rights—specifically rolling back protections and criminalizing gender nonconformity—the events that unfolded yesterday in the U.S. were nothing short of horrific. The incident where bullets narrowly missed a former President's head serves as a poignant reminder of our profound gratitude for the simple act of waking up each morning.

President Joe Biden condemned political violence following the shooting that abruptly interrupted a political rally. The Vatican remarked that the assassination attempt "wounds people and democracy." Archbishop Timothy Broglio, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, stated, "We pray for our country and for an end to political violence, which is never a solution to political disagreements."

Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston from Metropolitan Community Church urged for "prayers for peace across the USA during this time" and in a pastoral letter issued today said "Tensions were already running high in the lead up to the presidential elections in November. The shooting of former President Trump yesterday will add to this sense of instability, hostility and division. Violence is not the answer. It will take real courage and humility on the part of national leaders to change the dialogue, to look for areas of agreement and to disagree well, without using polarising, fear-based rhetoric.

You, our leaders and congregations in the USA, minister courageously in this climate of fear and division. You continue to stand firm, speaking out in the face of ongoing removal of LGBT+ and women’s rights, anti-trans violence, xenophobic speeches and wholesale removal of programmes that support diversity, equity and inclusion. Don’t give up. God is with you. MCC is with you. Around the world, we are holding you in prayer, grateful for your ministry, your faith filled courage, your commitment to love, truth and justice. You are bringing peace on earth, right where you are."

Bishop David Zubik from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where the shooting occurred, urged the nation to "join together in prayer for the health and safety of all, for healing and peace, and for an end to this climate of violence." Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago described the assassination attempt as "horrific," emphasizing the moment's significant risk to our democracy and encouraging a choice for peace.

In the wake of this tragedy, we are already seeing misinformation spreading online, with various narratives emerging that seek to exploit the situation. While Trump was fortunate to escape with minor injuries, we must remember those who were not as lucky. Let us take a moment to collectively pray for the victims of this tragedy and extend our deepest thoughts and prayers to their loved ones, as well as anyone grappling with trauma from this incident.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9
