Daily Devotional: Embrace Your Faith through Struggle

Hey awesome folks! Welcome back! Today, we're delving into our daily dose of inspiration, sharing a brief uplifting insight to brighten your day. If time allows, read Genesis 32 in your preferred Bible translation before continuing here.

For those in a hurry, reflect on the following passage:

'But Jacob stayed apart by himself, and a man wrestled with him until dawn broke. When the man saw that he couldn’t defeat Jacob, he grabbed Jacob’s thigh and tore a muscle in Jacob’s thigh as he wrestled with him. The man said, “Let me go because the dawn is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I won’t let you go until you bless me.” He said to Jacob, “What’s your name?” and he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name won’t be Jacob any longer, but Israel, because you struggled with God and with men and won.” Jacob also asked and said, “Tell me your name.” But he said, “Why do you ask for my name?” and he blessed Jacob there. Jacob named the place Peniel, “because I’ve seen God face-to-face, and my life has been saved.” The sun rose as Jacob passed Penuel, limping because of his thigh. Therefore, Israelites don’t eat the tendon attached to the thigh muscle to this day, because he grabbed Jacob’s thigh muscle at the tendon' - Genesis 32:24-32

Jacob, a complex figure in the Bible, is not universally admired. Known for his cunning and self-interest, he maneuvers through life with a determination to secure his rightful place, even resorting to deception when necessary.

However, delving deeper, we see a man who feels out of sync with his family, marginalized for his differences and overlooked in inheritance. Despite these challenges, Jacob perseveres, working tirelessly for his blessings—inheritance, wives, and livestock. Yet, feeling the need to reconcile with his past, he prepares to face his estranged brother, fearing retribution.

Alone in the wilderness, Jacob wrestles with a divine being throughout the night. Accustomed to fighting for what he desires, he refuses to release his grasp until he receives a blessing. This encounter changes him profoundly, marked by a new identity and a transformed purpose.

For many in the queer and trans community, this narrative resonates deeply. It speaks to the struggle for acceptance, the quest for blessings, and the transformative power of embracing one's true self.

Noticeably absent from the text is condemnation of Jacob’s tenacity. Instead, it validates his resilience, his insistence on seeking blessing, and his willingness to be transformed.

So, persevere. Fight for your faith. Demand your place and your blessings.

Reflection Questions:

If your name were to be changed by a divine encounter, what do you think it might become?

Perform a meaningful act of kindness for someone else today.
Consider one action you can take now to advocate for greater justice in your community.
Let Jacob’s journey inspire you to embrace your own path of struggle, faith, and transformation.
