Daily Devotional: The Lord’s Prayer
Hey there, everyone! It’s wonderful to see you all again! Today, we’re going to explore our daily devotional, sharing a quick reflection to inspire a bright start to your day. Take a moment to read Matthew 6:5-14 in your preferred Bible translation, then return here.
If you're pressed for time, check out the passage below and notice any phrases that stand out to you:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
For if you forgive others when they sin against you,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others,
your Father will not forgive your sins.
The “Lord’s Prayer” is one of the most well-known prayers in Christianity, perhaps even in the world. You might even recite it by heart.
What many see as a routine recitation is actually a profound call to action filled with meaning. Let’s unpack it.
The phrase “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” lays the foundation for everything that follows—and for our entire faith. We’re not simply waiting for a future paradise; we’re invoking a new way of living right here, right now.
So, what is God’s will? According to Matthew, Jesus teaches us that everyone deserves to be fed, debts should be forgiven, and we must extend forgiveness to one another.
It’s evident that we are called to be active participants in this. We must forgive debts and pardon sins. Together, we are co-creating “the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.”
“Social justice” isn’t just an addition to Christianity; it’s at the very core of it.
Remember this phrase: on earth as it is in heaven.
Here. Now. Today. Let’s make it happen.
