Rev Charissa Suli: Pioneering as new President in the UCA

Tonight at St Stephen's Uniting Church in Sydney, the UCA witnessed the historic installation of Reverend Charissa Suli as 17th President of the Uniting Church in Australia. Charissa's journey to this milestone has been marked by initial discouragement in pursuing ministry. She was once told she couldn't be a minister, yet she has persevered to become a trailblazer. A mother of four and the daughter of Tongan immigrants, Charissa has made history as the first person of colour to lead the Uniting Church in Australia. You can view a replay of the installation service here.

Her path to leadership reflects a profound evolution: from aspiring beautician to spiritual leader, driven by faith and resilience. Despite societal judgments and personal challenges, including early motherhood, Charissa's determination, bolstered by support from her family and community, has brought her to this pivotal moment.

At 41 years old, Charissa's impending presidency of Australia's third-largest Christian denomination is a significant milestone. Reverend Sharon Hollis of the Uniting Church hailed Charissa's election as a moment of historical importance and inspiration, celebrating her as the youngest and first person of colour to assume this role and tonight the UCA released Sharon as outgoing President.

Charissa's leadership is anticipated to uphold the church's progressive values, including its stance on same-sex marriage and advocacy for Indigenous rights. Grounded in her Pasifika heritage, Charissa aims to amplify marginalized voices and promote inclusivity within the church.

Reflecting on her journey, Charissa emphasizes the imperative of embracing diversity and addressing pressing issues such as mental health and domestic violence. She envisions a church that not only acknowledges but actively supports young people and marginalized communities.

As she prepares to embark on her new role, Charissa remains dedicated to bridging cultural divides and advancing a church that mirrors the vibrant diversity of Australian society. Her appointment serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring future generations to embrace their unique paths and voices within their faith communities.

Rev Charissa Suli has been installed as the 17th President
of the Uniting Church in Australia.

May you know the support and care of the whole church during your tenure as President, Rev. Charissa, and may God bless you abundantly, Reverend Sharon. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Tau kau ke fakamalo’ia ’Ae Tamai, Alo, laumalie.

A memorable hymn performed in the evening was Blessed Assurance.
