A Christian Response to the Resurgence of Homophobic Violence in Australia
The recent resurgence of homophobic violence in Australia is a sobering reminder that our journey towards full equality and safety for the LGBTQIA+ community is far from complete. Men in Victoria and the ACT have been targeted through fake profiles on dating apps, leading to assaults, robbery, and homophobic slurs. These incidents evoke painful memories of the brutal violence of the 80s and 90s, showing that despite progress, the danger persists.
As Christians, we are called to respond with the love and justice that Jesus exemplified. Australia's first openly gay head of government, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, reflected on how these attacks remind him of an era he thought was behind us. This highlights the need for our continued vigilance and proactive support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
The increased visibility of sexually and gender diverse individuals has, unfortunately, sparked a negative backlash, particularly amplified through digital platforms, especially during the Olympics. Researcher Justin Ellis points to the dangerous conflation of same-sex attraction with child grooming as a tactic to incite fear and confusion. These actions run counter to the inclusive and affirming love that Jesus taught.
Despite the significant milestone of marriage equality in 2017, these recent attacks demonstrate that progress is never guaranteed. Police responses today are more supportive, with public condemnations of such violence, yet their advice to meet in public places can be impractical for those still exploring their sexuality or unable to come out publicly.
As advocates for justice, we must emphasise the need for holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring that the LGBTQIA+ community feels safe and supported. Our faith compels us to stand in solidarity with our queer siblings, championing their right to live without fear.
Let us remember that the battle for equality requires our continuous effort and unwavering commitment to love and inclusion. Through our actions and advocacy, we can help create a world where everyone is embraced and valued for who they are, reflecting the boundless love of Christ.
