Daily Devotional: Come and See - A New Perspective on Evangelism

Hey amazing folks! So glad you're here. Today, let’s explore a fresh devotional thought that’s sure to add a bit of joy and inspiration to your day.  If you have a moment, I encourage you to read John 1:31-51 in your preferred Bible translation, then return to this page. If you're pressed for time, take a look at this passage and note what stands out to you:

"The next day John was standing again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus walking along he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard what he said, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he asked, “What are you looking for?” They said, “Rabbi (which is translated Teacher), where are you staying?” He replied, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon."

Often, we view “evangelism” as a pushy endeavour—approaching strangers and forcefully sharing our faith, much like John the Baptist's dramatic calls to “Repent!” Yet, Jesus demonstrates a different approach in this narrative. He doesn’t chase after people; instead, He waits until they show interest. Noticing their curiosity, He poses a profound question: “What are you seeking?” This question is layered with depth and invites a range of responses, getting right to the heart of their search.

The disciples answer simply, asking where Jesus is staying. In response, Jesus offers a profound invitation: “Come and see.”

He could have dismissed their surface-level answer or given a simple address and gone about His business. But instead, He extends a personal invitation to experience His life firsthand. By saying, “Come and see,” Jesus invites them not just to visit, but to truly engage with who He is and how He lives. His invitation is so compelling that they choose to stay with Him, leading to a transformative journey.

From Jesus's approach, we can learn a lot about sharing our faith and embracing our identities, including queer and trans experiences. Sharing the Good News should be a natural extension of our relationships, founded in genuine connection. It's as simple as inviting someone to “come and see.”

Reflection Questions:

Do you find it challenging to talk about your faith or identity with others? Why or why not?
If it were easier for you to share, what would you want others to know about your faith and life?
What does Jesus’s invitation to “come and see” mean to you personally?

Practical Exercises:
Who can you invite into your life this week to “come and see”?
Share an aspect of your identity with someone you trust.
Discuss a way you are growing in your faith with someone close to you.
