Daily Devotional: What Are You Building On?

Hey fabulous friends! Welcome back! Today, we're diving into the daily devotional, sharing a quick uplifting thought to brighten your day.  If you have a moment, take a look at Luke 6:39-49 in your favourite Bible translation before continuing here. If you're short on time, consider this passage and notice what stands out to you:

"Why do you call me “Lord, Lord”, and do not do what I tell you? 47I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. 48That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house."

After college, I read Stealing Jesus by Bruce Bawer, which explores the origins of various evangelical beliefs, particularly in the U.S. I was shocked to learn that the concept of the rapture, which had instilled so much fear in me growing up, was only about 150 years old. My church had presented it as if it were a time-honoured teaching from Jesus himself. This revelation made me question what else I might have been misinformed about.

My childhood faith felt like a house of cards—each belief was precariously dependent on the others. Pull out one card, and the whole structure could come crashing down. It’s similar to the house Jesus describes in Luke that’s built on sand. One strong wave, and it’s all over.

Many of us have obsessed over finding solid answers to the "Clobber verses," trying to build a strong defence. Despite our efforts, we often felt insecure, only to discover later that our defences were built on shaky ground.

So, what is the foundation of your faith? What do you know for sure? Begin there and build from that solid base. Don’t be afraid to reassess if what you once considered rock-solid turns out to be sand.

Reflection Questions:
What is the foundation of your faith built upon?
Reflect on a time when your faith shifted because your foundation was challenged. What did that experience teach you?
Identify one aspect of your faith or belief system that feels unwavering and solid.

Practical Exercises:
List the beliefs you feel confident in, which you can rely on when facing life’s challenges.
Identify trusted teachers or mentors in your life who offer honest guidance.
Take one action this week that reinforces the faith journey you are on.

That concludes our devotional for today! I hope this message has brightened your day. If you found it meaningful, please consider liking or sharing this content. Thank you for joining us, and remember to embrace your uniqueness. Wishing you well and a positive mindset until we meet again!
