Reflecting on the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord: A Call to Shine Bright
Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, a pivotal moment in the life of Jesus and in our spiritual journey. As we jump into the readings and reflect on the significance of this feast, we are invited to consider how the Transfiguration can inspire us to let our own lives shine with the light of Christ.
In the Gospel of Mark (9:2–10), we read about the extraordinary event where Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John. His appearance becomes dazzlingly white, and his face shines like the sun. Moses and Elijah appear with him, and a divine voice proclaims, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased.”
This moment is not just a miraculous display of divine glory but also a profound revelation of Jesus' true nature. It is a moment of profound clarity and transformation that offers a glimpse of heaven's majesty. Just as Jesus was declared the Beloved Son at the Jordan River, so too is he affirmed in his divine identity on the mountaintop. This continuity reminds us of the consistent divine affirmation of Jesus’ mission and identity.
In our daily lives, we often seek extraordinary experiences to affirm our faith. We long for those mountaintop moments, those vivid encounters with the divine that can seem elusive. In my sermon from February 2023, I reflected on the temptation to find Jesus in the miraculous—whether in the shape of a cloud or a piece of toast—and the importance of recognising Jesus in the ordinary moments of our lives.
Our encounter with Jesus is not always dramatic. Often, it is found in the small, everyday experiences—through a kind word, a helping hand, or the beauty of creation. The Transfiguration calls us to see beyond the ordinary and recognise the divine in the mundane.
The Feast of the Transfiguration challenges us to let our own lives reflect the light of Christ. Just as Jesus' face shone with divine radiance, we are called to let our faces shine with the light of Christ. This is not about seeking personal glory but about allowing the transformative power of Christ to shine through us in our actions and attitudes.
As we celebrate this feast, let us commit ourselves to be beacons of Christ’s light in the world. We are invited to be agents of transformation, bringing the light of Christ to those around us. This means shining compassion on those in need, offering hope to the weary, and living out our faith with integrity and love.
The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is a reminder of the divine glory that is present in our lives and in our world. It calls us to seek and reflect that divine light in both extraordinary and ordinary moments. As we celebrate today, let us pray for the grace to let our lives be transformed and to shine brightly with the light of Christ. Amen
