Saint Stephen’s Legacy and the Power of Divine Protection

On August 16, the Church honours Saint Stephen of Hungary, a remarkable leader whose life exemplified the transformative power of faith. Born around 975 and passing in 1038, Stephen’s legacy is a testament to his deep devotion, effective leadership, and significant impact on Hungary’s Christianisation.

Before Christianity took root, Hungary was immersed in pagan traditions. Stephen, originally named Vajk, was the son of Grand Prince Géza and his Christian wife, Sarolt. Sarolt had a vision of Saint Stephen, the first martyr, who foretold that her son would lead their land into Christianity. Baptised as Stephen, he ascended to power at around 21 years old and was crowned King of Hungary around the turn of the millennium, with the blessing of Pope Sylvester II and Holy Roman Emperor Otto III.

Stephen’s reign was characterised by his dedication to spreading Christianity. He established dioceses, built monasteries, and welcomed missionaries. His leadership was marked by fairness, generosity, and a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also sought protection for his kingdom through prayer and faith, mirroring the strength and guidance often attributed to Saint Michael the Archangel, who is revered as a protector and leader against evil.

Despite personal tragedy—his son Emeric’s death in 1031—Stephen remained steadfast in his mission. His reign laid the foundation for Hungary’s enduring Christian heritage, embodying the virtues of leadership and faith that Saint Michael symbolises: protection, courage, and unwavering commitment to a higher cause.

Prayer:

Saint Stephen of Hungary, your life of faith and leadership continues to inspire us. Help us to follow your example of using our gifts and authority for the greater good and the glory of God. We also seek the protection of Saint Michael the Archangel, that we may be shielded from evil and guided in our own missions. Saint Stephen, pray for us. Saint Michael, defend us in battle. Jesus, we trust in You. Amen.
