Archbishop Greaves to Address LGBTQIA+ Community at Brisbane Pride Day Rally

This weekend, Brisbane is set to witness a heartfelt moment of recognition and support for the LGBTQIA+ community as Archbishop Jeremy Greaves takes part in the Brisbane Pride Day Rally. On Saturday, September 21, at 9 am, he will address the crowd, aiming to bring attention to the recent apology issued by the Church. The offering of The Diocesan Apology to Sexuality-Diverse and Gender-Diverse people and their families and friends during the Brisbane Pride Festival will be highlighted. With just five minutes allocated for his remarks, the decision has been made for him to reference the apology rather than deliver it in full. This approach acknowledges the busy schedule that follows, including an address by the Premier, which might not allow attendees the space to truly absorb the apology.

The rally will unfold in Queens Park, a historic site that once housed St John’s Pro-Cathedral, symbolising a significant shift towards inclusivity. Following the rally, participants will march to Musgrave Park, continuing the spirit of celebration and solidarity.

In an ongoing commitment to support the LGBTQIA+ community, the Cathedral, alongside Holy Trinity, The Valley, will set up a stall at the Pride Festival Day in Musgrave Park from 10 am to 5 pm. This collaboration highlights the importance of visibility and connection within the community.

On Sunday evening, the message of inclusion will continue during Evensong at 6 pm, celebrating the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Here, the Archbishop will not only preach but will also formally offer the apology, creating a space for reflection, prayer, and the lighting of candles. Refreshments will be provided, making it a welcoming opportunity for the community to gather in solidarity.

This weekend is more than just a series of events; it’s a significant step towards healing and recognition. It invites everyone to come together, reflect on the past, and embrace a future filled with acceptance and love. If you’re able, your presence would add to this important moment in Brisbane’s journey towards inclusivity.

For those who cannot attend in person, you can join in via the Cathedral YouTube stream. The service will include all the words for Evensong in the provided booklet. This is not just a moment for the Church but for all to unite in solidarity, as we move towards a future where everyone is celebrated for who they are.
