Embracing Difference: A Reflection on Melbourne Anglicans

In a world increasingly defined by division, a recent reflection by Canon Associate Professor Bob Derrenbacker, Dean of Trinity College Theological School resonates. His insights remind us that embracing difference—not just tolerating it—is essential for our growth and unity.

However as Dr Peter Lewis points out, when examining the Gospel accounts, it’s crucial to recognise the interrelationships among them. Matthew and Luke, for instance, drew from Mark’s narrative, but they each made distinct changes to suit their own theological aims. A notable example is found in Mark 6:3, where the townspeople ask, “Isn’t this Mary’s son?” In contrast, Luke 4:22 records the question as “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” This shift reflects Luke’s intent to emphasise Jesus’ legitimacy and lineage. Furthermore, John’s Gospel, written later, diverges significantly from the Synoptic accounts, focusing more on spiritual truths rather than a straightforward narrative.

Bob's journey as a biblical scholar underscores a truth: the Gospels, while united in their portrayal of Jesus, showcase distinct narratives that reflect the unique perspectives of their authors. This idea serves as an apt metaphor for the diverse Melbourne Anglican Diocese. From City on a Hill to St Peter’s Eastern Hill, their parishes embody a wide spectrum of theological and cultural identities, each contributing to the richness of our shared faith. However, it’s important to note that while Anglicans should celebrate diversity, understanding the reasons behind the differences in the Gospels is equally essential.

Melbourne is a microcosm of the global Anglican Communion, renowned for its cultural and theological diversity. The community spans a range from low church to high church expressions, enriched by at least 16 non-English language groups across 41 parishes. This diversity can sometimes lead to tension and misunderstanding, but it also offers an opportunity for deeper connection and appreciation of one another’s perspectives.

Bob encourages everyone to acknowledge these differences and not shy away from them. Just as the Gospels present varied accounts of Jesus’ life, our differences reflect the unique ways in which we understand and experience faith. Embracing this diversity allows us to see the broader picture of our shared journey, highlighting that while we may worship differently, we follow the same Jesus.

Despite our differences, there are foundational elements that unite Anglicans: liturgy, commitment to social justice, and shared practices like the Eucharist and daily prayer. Bob's call to appreciate difference is not a dismissal of our common beliefs but an invitation to enrich our faith through understanding.

As we navigate our own diverse communities, let’s strive to appreciate the unique contributions of each parish, church and congregation. Let’s engage in conversations that challenge our views and expand our understanding, fostering a spirit of unity amidst our differences.

In reflecting on Bob's message, he encourage us all to not only coexist with our differences but to celebrate them. Let’s create spaces where diverse voices can be heard, where theological discussions can flourish, and where we can learn from one another’s experiences.

As we continue our journey together as Progressive Christians, may we cultivate a community that values difference, allowing it to deepen our faith and strengthen our bonds. In doing so, we can embody the spirit of inclusivity that lies at the heart of the Gospel, creating a vibrant tapestry of faith that reflects the richness of our shared humanity.

Indeed, as our calling matures, we learn to appreciate and live with all sorts of differences. In Galatians 3:28, we are reminded that in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, for we are all one in Him. Let us embrace this truth, celebrating our diversity while remaining united in our shared faith.
