Holy Cross Day

Today, on this Feast of the Holy Cross, we are invited to reflect deeply on the profound significance of the cross in our lives. As we celebrate this holy day, we are reminded of the words of Jesus: “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people unto myself.” These words are not just a promise but a call to action—a call to lift high the cross in our own lives.

In our modern world, the cross is everywhere. From jewellery to fashion statements, it seems the symbol of the cross is ubiquitous. Yet, despite its presence in popular culture, many people still do not fully grasp its true meaning. The cross has become a part of the landscape, but its depth and significance often remain veiled to those who encounter it casually.

We live in a world that is "Christ haunted" but not necessarily Christian. Many recognise the cross and acknowledge its importance, yet they do not fully understand or embrace the life and sacrifice it represents. Our calling as Christians is not merely to let the cross be a symbol of adornment but to make it a living reality in our daily lives.

To lift high the cross, we need to go beyond superficial gestures. We are called to embody the essence of the cross in our actions and our attitudes. This means embracing the cruciform life that Jesus demonstrated—one of humility, service, and sacrificial love.

Jesus’ statement about being “lifted up” points directly to His crucifixion. He did not come to be served but to serve, and He calls us to follow in His footsteps. In the Letter to the Philippians, we are reminded of this radical example of humility: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.”

To lift high the cross means to live out this example of self-emptying love and sacrifice. It means being willing to put others before ourselves, to serve those in need, and to love even when it is difficult. In doing so, we not only honour the cross but also become living witnesses to its power.

We are called to be ambassadors of Christ, drawing others to Him not through grandiose displays but through our everyday actions of love and service. For many, the only encounter they may have with the cross and with Christ might be through how we live our lives. As we go about our daily routines, let us be mindful that our actions can reflect the light of Christ and draw others to Him.

On this Feast of the Holy Cross, let us remember the cross traced upon us in our baptism. This sign is not merely a mark but a call to live our lives under its banner. It is a call to let the light of Christ’s love shine through us in all that we do.

Let us lift high the cross, not as a mere symbol, but as a living testament to the love and grace of our Lord. Let us proclaim the love of Christ through our lives, until the whole world adores His sacred Name.

In the words of the hymn we sang: “Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the world adore His sacred Name… Each newborn soldier of the Crucified bears on the brow the seal of Him who died.”

May we, who bear this seal, live out our calling with courage and conviction, lifting high the cross in every corner of our world.

Amen.
