Today is the Day to Ask, "R U OK?"

Today is the day to ask, "R U OK?"—a question that should be asked every day, not just on special occasions. The R U OK? campaign is calling on the LGBTIQ+ community and their allies to make this simple check-in part of their daily routine because life's challenges don’t wait for a designated day.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, LGBTIQ+ individuals face higher levels of mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts and self-harm, compared to the general population. Katherine Newton, CEO of R U OK?, points out that while many LGBTIQ+ people lead fulfilling lives, they are still more vulnerable to suicide.

"The increased risk isn't due to their sexuality, gender identity, or intersex characteristics," Newton explains. "Rather, it's the result of psychological distress caused by discrimination, prejudice, and exclusion."

R U OK? research shows that 90% of people who are regularly asked "R U OK?" feel more supported and connected. Newton adds, "While we see a surge in supportive actions around R U OK?Day, it's essential to remember that life unfolds every day. Our message is clear: ask 'R U OK?' any day, because a heartfelt conversation can make a real difference."

Scott Perkins, a R U OK? Community Ambassador and a member of the LGBTIQ+ community living on the Darug Nation in Penrith, underscores the need for these conversations throughout the year. "I've supported many friends and colleagues through tough times, including instances where they’ve felt suicidal," Perkins shares.

R U OK? has resources to help build confidence among the LGBTIQ+ community and their allies to engage in meaningful conversations all year long. Perkins notes, "I've seen firsthand how valuable a simple check-in can be. Regular conversations have helped those struggling to see a brighter future."

Katherine Newton stresses the importance of ongoing support: "Life can change quickly—within a year, a month, or even a week. Whether it's a friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, everyone faces ups and downs. Regular check-ins can help prevent minor issues from becoming major problems."

Today, R U OK?Day, 12 September 2024, is a reminder to ask "R U OK?" any day, because life's challenges don’t adhere to a calendar. For additional support and resources, visit ruok.org.au for tips and tools on fostering a supportive culture year-round.
