A Little Light in Southport: Memorial Cross Gets a Shine, Thanks to John Botwright
Southport, Gold Coast, Australia. Last night, Southport received a much-needed upgrade to its local skyline. No, it wasn't a new beachside café or a fancy high-rise, but something a little more meaningful: the lighting on the memorial cross in the columbarium was finally switched on.
And who’s behind this glowing tribute? None other than the one and only late John Botwright, a Southport legend who, when he wasn't busy helping out at the church, was rallying behind the Labrador Men’s Shed, getting the community hands-on with everything from DIY projects to fixing up the town’s oldest taps.
The cross, now bathed in soft, comforting light, serves as both a landmark and a lasting tribute to John’s legacy. It's not just a cross; it’s a symbol of service, friendship, and a whole lot of local know-how. If John were here, we reckon he’d be the first to crack a joke about how "lighting up the place was probably the easiest thing he's done all year."
A huge shout-out goes to the dedicated crew who made it happen: David, Julie, Anastasia, Shane, Jaye, and everyone else who chipped in. You guys not only brought the light back to Southport—literally—but also showed just how much this community shines when it comes together. If only we had a dollar for every time someone said, “It’s about time the cross had its moment in the spotlight,” we’d be funding more community projects than we know what to do with!
And, of course, a massive thank you to the Men’s Shed for crafting the cross itself with such care and craftsmanship. Your skill and dedication helped bring this iconic landmark back to life, and we couldn't be prouder of the result. The lighting now makes sure the cross stands tall and proud, even after the sun goes down. It’s the kind of glow that says, "We remember, we appreciate, and we celebrate." It’s also perfect for those who enjoy a little peace and quiet at dusk.
So, next time you’re in the area, swing by the columbarium, take a minute to appreciate the glow. If you’re lucky, you might just feel a little of that DIY spirit John spread so generously. But if you’re hoping for the cross to hand you a toolbox—well, that might be asking a bit much.
Cheers to John, to the helpers, and to the light that now shines a little brighter over Southport. Here's to keeping the community spirit—and the lights—on!
