A Peacemaking Leader Retires: Archbishop Philip Freier Steps Down

On February 9, 2025, St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne was filled with over 1,000 people, including clergy, community leaders, and faithful from across Australia and beyond, to honour the retirement of Archbishop Philip Freier. After 18 years of service as Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Freier laid down his pastoral staff in a moving Evensong service, marking both his retirement and his 70th birthday.

Dr. Freier’s tenure was defined by his commitment to reconciliation, the safety of vulnerable people, women’s ministry, and fostering peace within the Anglican Church and beyond. Known as a “Father of the House” among his peers, he was celebrated for his wisdom, humility, and ability to bring calm to anxious situations. His leadership during the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was particularly significant, helping to shape a safer and more accountable church.

Archbishop Freier’s dedication to Indigenous communities and multicultural engagement was also deeply appreciated. He and his wife, Joy, were known for their hospitality and care, extending their ministry beyond the church walls to neighbors, visitors, and marginalized communities.

As the Anglican Church of Melbourne looks to the future, we pray for a progressive leader who will continue to champion justice, reconciliation, and care for those on the margins—just as Jesus did. May the next archbishop build on Dr. Freier’s legacy, leading with courage, compassion, and a vision for a more inclusive church.

Let us give thanks for Archbishop Freier’s faithful service and pray for the journey ahead for the Anglican Church in Melbourne.
