Celebrating Visibility: Episcopalians Stand with Trans and Nonbinary Communities
Episcopalians across the U.S., along with some churches here in Australia, are observing Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31) with special services and events celebrating trans and nonbinary people while raising awareness of the discrimination they face.
It’s encouraging to see active efforts in the U.S. to stand with those on the margins and advocate for love and truth. A Message from the Bishops of New York:
This day of visibility, founded in 2009, contrasts with the Transgender Day of Remembrance by focusing on pride and empowerment, even as anti-trans legislation and hate crimes continue to rise. Episcopal leaders are calling for stronger relationships with local trans communities to provide tangible support and solidarity.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) boldly declares that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." This powerful truth calls us to stand with marginalized communities, including trans and nonbinary individuals, to protect and honor their inherent worth. By marking this day, Episcopalians and allies reaffirm their dedication to these universal values, championing a vision of a more inclusive and just world.
A Prayer for Transgender Day of Visibility:
Loving and inclusive God,
We give thanks for the diversity of your creation and for the beauty of every person made in your image.
On this Transgender Day of Visibility, we lift up our trans and nonbinary siblings, celebrating their courage, resilience, and the gifts they bring to the world.
Grant us the wisdom to listen, the compassion to support, and the strength to stand against injustice and discrimination.
May we be instruments of your love, working to create a world where all are seen, valued, and affirmed in their full dignity.
In your holy name, we pray. Amen.
